KXLG – Brookings, SD Rosemarie Nold, a professor and assistant head of the Department of Animal Science at South Dakota State University, has been recognized for her exceptional educational contributions by being named an American Society of Animal Science Teaching Fellow. The esteemed award was bestowed upon Nold during the society’s annual meeting in Calgary, Alberta, in July.

With a decade of service at SDSU, Nold has previously held leadership roles within SDSU Extension, serving as both district Extension director and Extension Ag and Natural Resources Program director. Her dedication to student success is evident in her role as the department’s undergraduate curriculum coordinator and her active involvement in numerous student organizations. Nold is also a founding member and moderator of the National 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl and chairs the National 4-H Livestock Skillathon Committee.

Joseph Cassady, South Dakota Corn Endowed Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, praised Nold’s impact on students. “Dr. Nold’s engaged and creative teaching has profoundly impacted countless students during her career,” Cassady said. “She is renowned for empowering students to set and achieve ‘real world’ goals, fostering a culture of active and engaged learning.”

Nold’s teaching philosophy is centered on student involvement. Her Introduction to Animal Science course, which enrolls nearly 175 students each semester, emphasizes active participation beyond mere knowledge acquisition. By mandating individual conferences with each student and providing unique experiential learning opportunities, Nold creates a rich and immersive educational environment.

A proud alumna of SDSU, Nold earned her Ph.D. in animal science, emphasizing meat science, complementing her master’s degree from Kansas State University and her bachelor’s degree from SDSU.

Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Nold attributed her success to the support of colleagues, students, and mentors. “I am incredibly humbled and honored to receive this fellowship,” she said. “The individuals I’ve had the privilege to work with over the years have been instrumental to my success.”

The American Society of Animal Science Fellow Award in Teaching is granted to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to the animal industry and the society, maintaining continuous membership for at least 25 years.
